Siblings Luca Nodjoumi (bass/piano/vox) and Nika Nodjoumi (drums/guitar/piano/vox) are @lunika_nyc a brother-sister teen-band from New York City. LuNika’s parents are filmmakers (dad hails from the German town Göttingen; mom is a born New Yorker) and their grandparents are celebrated Iranian artists Nahid Hagigat and Nicky Nodjoumi, one of Iran’s most revolutionary painters and subject of a recent HBO Documentary. Thanks to this cultural background LuNika’s creative inspiration comes from different art forms and three places at once: Iran, Germany and their hometown New York. During the 2020 pandemic, while cooped up at home like the rest of the world, the siblings started writing original songs. In 2021, at age 11 and 13, they raised more than 25,000 dollars on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter for their debut album IMAGINING, garnering national press coverage on NBC along the way. In 2022, after the killing of 22-year old Mahsa Amini by “morality police” in Iran sparked international outrage, LuNika recorded a protest song called WOMAN LIFE FREEDOM from their living room in Brooklyn. The song, an adaptation of Gayle’s “ABCDFU” but with LuNika’s lyrics in support of their fellow Iranians and the women-led uprisings in Iran, went viral garnering 1.5 Million instagram views on LuNika’s instagram channel alone, and leading to interview requests from London based Iranian expat TV channel Manoto. Also in 2022, LuNika’s debut album IMAGINING featuring 10 of their original songs was completed along with their music video STUPID TONE. Their album IMAGINING was released anyways and Luca and Nika are now featured with three of their songs, including WOMEN LIFE FREEDOM, in the above mentioned HBO Documentary A REVOLUTION ON CANVAS about their grandparents’ life and and legacy as activist-artists.
